What requirements do I need to meet to become an instrument pilot?

Have logged fifty hours of cross country time as pilot in command, of which 10 hours must have been in an airplane.

Log at least 40 hours of actual or simulated in the areas listed under 61.65(c), of which 15 hours must have been received from an authorized instrument flight instructor.

Pass the 60-question instrument aeronautical knowledge test within 2 hour and 30 minutes with a minimum score of 70%.

Pass the required instrument rating oral exam and practical test within Practical Test Standards (PTS) with a FAA authorized designated examiner.

How much will it cost to earn my instrument rating?

The cost of earning a instrument rating varies from person-to-person. The Federal Aviation Administration has set a minimum of 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time to earn your instrument rating. Aircraft rental is $105 per hour (with fuel) and instruction is $55 per hour.
