This is the doctorate level license in the flying world. It is required to be the pilot in command of any airline aircraft while carrying passengers and to be pilot in command of a turbojet aircraft under charter flight operations.   The requirements are currently in a state of change due to congressional legislation, but they are currently the following:

The basic requirements for the rating are:

Hold at least a current commercial pilot certificate

Be at least 23 years of age

Be able to read, speak, write and understand the English language

Pass a computerized aeronautical knowledge test

Pass a practical test

If training under Part 61, Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) section 61.159, requires at least 1500 hours of flight time, including 250 hours of pilot in command flight time, 500 hours of cross country flight time, and 100 hours of night flight time and 75 hours of actual or simulated instrument flight time.   There are no minimum flight time training requirements. How much time you spend with an instructor will depend on your flying abilities. There are additional requirements, but these are the basics.
