Continental Aerospace Technologies announced a partnership with VerdeGo Aero Inc. on the opening day of EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to develop Integrated Distributed Electric Propulsion (IDEP) systems for future urban air mobility and vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft.
The hybrid electric technology will be based on Continental’s diesel piston aircraft engines tied to electric motors and batteries. The goal is create a class of “flying car” to serve the global needs for urban mobility in aircraft that can burn widely available jet fuel.
based in Daytona Beach, Florida, VerdeGo is working closely with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to develop IDEP hybrid-electric systems designed for VTOL aircraft with maximum takeoff weights up to 7,500 pounds. VerdeGo's president is Erik Lindbergh, grandson of famed aviator Charles Lindbergh.
Continental and VerdeGo plan to offer the hybrid power systems for a wide variety of VTOL air taxi and traditional GA aircraft.
