Aerospace technology is changing the world. The areas of aerospace technology are future growth engines in this day and age, and as such, many countries are competing intensely to further advance the technology in order to gain the upper end of the sky and outer space as a whole. The future is increasingly beginning to take form of a global economy based on aerospace technology, with the province of a humankind being extended into outer space and beyond. While automobiles, semiconductors, steel, and shipbuilding industry has been mainstays of Korea’s economy, cutting-edge aviation and space technology will take over the role to spearhead the future of Korea.
In this spirit, the Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) was established on October 10, 1989 as a national aerospace research institution with the purpose of “contributing to solid development of the national economy and enhancement of national life through a new exploration and technological advancements, development, and dissemination in the field of aerospace science and technology.” Ever since its inception, KARI has achieved significant accomplishments, despite its rather short history, as we have successfully secured advanced satellite technology for the development of multi-purpose satellites, developed Korea’s 1st space launch vehicle ‘Naro’, and established the NARO Space Center, as well as obtained aviation technology through the Korean Helicopter Program and Smart UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle).
In the future, we plan to build up our own indigenous launch capability, strengthen national safety and public service, industrialize satellite information and applications technology, explore the moon through our own technology, and develop environmentally-friendly and highly-efficient cutting-edge aircraft and core aerospace technology so as to fulfill the aspirations and values that Korea holds toward space and beyond.
Everyone at KARI will remain fully committed to achieving our missions so that our country can emerge as an aerospace powerhouse in the 21st century and play a central role in the aerospace area.
The feedback and support by the government and citizens as a whole are definitely the motivating power for Korea to achieve the goal. KARI will make a dedicated effort to enhance the future of Korea.
