A Discovery Flight is not a sight-seeing flight. It's your flight. You sit in the pilot's seat. A flight instructor sits in the copilot's seat (doing all the things you don't know about yet)... but you taxi the airplane out to the runway, you fly the takeoff, you maneuver the airplane, and you land it. Obviously, the flight instructor is maintaining a loose grip on the duplicate set of controls throughout the flight, and is guiding you every step of the way. But it's your flight.
Prior to getting into the plane, the instructor will explain some of the basics of flight as you both perform a pre-flight check of the aircraft. And after your flight, for the rest of your life, you'll be able to say that you've done something that only one person in a thousand ever does.

Discovery Flights also make fantastic gifts. There's no minimum age limit, although it helps to be tall enough to reach the foot pedals. Still, we've had lots of students who took their Discovery Flight years before they started learning to drive mere automobiles.
