The following section describes how the Multi Engine Piston Class Rating, the Commercial Pilots Licence (CPL) and the Instrument Rating (IR) courses are organised.
Multi Engine Piston Class Rating
This course consists of 6 hours flying training in the Beech Duchess, 7 hours formal ground school, a 40 question in-house written test and a 1 hour flight test.
COMMERCIAL PILOTS LICENCE (CPL) COURSES
We offer 5 options for the CPL course.
If you choose to complete the CPL course in a multi-engined aircraft, the Skill Test with the CAA is then taken in a multi and there is no need to practice, or be tested on, 'non-airline-oriented manoeuvres' such as forced landings and glide approaches.
In other words, although a bit more expensive, the emphasis is on becoming experienced and proficient in multi engine skills.
If you choose to do the CPL after the IR you will have already done the training (and passed the relevant tests) for the general handling (Multi Rating) and the instrument flying (IR) so the additional training is concentrated on the navigation.
A) CPL Single-Engine
This 25 hour course consists of 20 hours in the Beech Sierra complex single and 5 hours in the FNPTII simulator.
This CPL course includes 20 hours flying in the complex single. This is much more than the minimum of only 5 hours required by JAA/EASA. However, the CAA test itself has to be undertaken in a complex aircraft and we have found that the extra time in the complex single leads to a significantly greater first time pass rate. Bearing in mind that the CAA test fee is now £775, the likely requirement to do training between tests plus the hire of the aircraft for a further test, it can be seen that a test failure will easily lead to further expenditure of £1,200 to £1,500. It is very much PAT policy to aim for full first time passes.
B) CPL Multi-Engine (combined single engined and multi-engined)
This 25 hour course consists of 13 hours in the Beech Sierra complex single, 5 hours in the FNPTII simulator and 7 hours in the Beech Duchess multi-engined aircraft. The multi rating course is carried out after the flying in the complex single is complete as a standalone course (see above), but the MEP Skill test is included within the CPL Skill test if you take this option.
Achieving the standard required is helped by completing the initial flying in a Beech complex single engine aircraft, which is similarly equipped to the multi, including HSI, RMI and our standard Garmin/Bendix King radio fit.
C) CPL Multi-Engine (all flying in multi-engined aircraft)
This 25 hour course consists of 5 hours in the FNPTII simulator and 20 hours in the Beech Duchess multi-engined aircraft. The multi rating course is carried out prior to starting the CPL, but the MEP Skill test is included within the CPL Skill test if you take this option.
D) CPL (single-engine) for holders of an Instrument Rating
This 15 hour course consists of training in the Beech Sierra complex single (all visual flying).
E) CPL (multi-engine) for holders of an Instrument Rating
This 15 hour course consists of training in the Beech Duchess multi-engined aircraft (all visual flying).
INSTRUMENT RATING
We offer a range of Instrument Rating course options. Most of these courses require some time in the FNPTI/II simulator and some in the aircraft.
Our simulators and our aircraft match the course requirements and objectives. For example, the multi IR courses consist only of multi time, as there is not much value in doing part of your multi IR course in a Cessna 172 or a PA28, if you are aiming for a first time pass in the very demanding EASA initial IR test.
Note that we now offer the Competency based IR (CBIR) course, rather than the traditional, longer IR course (see under our News section). This is a 35 hour course for holders of a CPL or Basic Instrument Flying Module (BIFM) (compared with 45 hours for the 'traditional' IR), or 45 hours if you do not hold a CPL or BIFM (compared with 55 hours for the 'traditional' IR).
We believe that our simulator training is second to none. However, unlike other schools, we recommend that the average student allows for a bit of extra time in the real aircraft. Thus, you will see that our full 45/35 hour courses are priced on the basis that there will be 20 hours in the aircraft against the industry standard/EASA minimum of 15 hours. We think that this is more realistic. For those students who can manage with the minimum 15 hours aircraft time, there will be a pro-rata reduction in the course price.
Our Beech Duchess/Sierra FNPTII is a state of the art simulator with dynamic control-loading and a realistic visual. It enables virtually every aircraft exercise to be completed in a realistic way. You will only move on to the aircraft when you are thoroughly proficient in all the skills required for a single crew IFR flight.
Because our FNPTII is type specific, you will find that there is minimal re-learning when you transfer to the real aircraft. All of our aircraft and the FNPTII are fitted in the same way, including standard Garmin 430 and Bendix King avionics.
Please note that, in order to get the 10 hours dispensation on the IR course, pilots have to be the holder of either a CPL, or a Basic Instrument Flying Module (BIFM) Certificate. PAT is approved to issue a BIFM certificate at the end of the CPL, based upon the 10 hours instrument flying completed during this course. Providing you have completed your CPL with PAT, you do not have to get your CPL issued in order to get the 10 hours dispensation.
A) Multi Engined Instrument Rating for non-holders of a CPL or a BIFM certificate
