SkyEye is a division of Line Design Technology Limited. Founded in 2010 as a technical consultancy offering survey and design services to the UK electricity industry, LDT has established itself as a market leader in the utilities sector. SkyEye represents our aerial mapping and inspection division that has embraced drone technology as a means of complimenting our traditional survey offering.
What is a drone?
Drones are more formally known as Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS). Essentially, a drone is a flying robot. The aircraft may be remotely controlled or can fly autonomously through software-controlled flight plans in their embedded systems working in conjunction with GPS. RPAS have most often been associated with the military but they are also used for search and rescue, surveillance, traffic monitoring, weather monitoring and firefighting, among other things. In the UK there are strict rules governing who can fly them and wher they are allowed to operate.
Who can fly a drone?
Anyone is able to fly a drone with a little practice. Modern electronics and flight control algorithms have made drones very simple to operate. However to operate a drone for commercial gain a drone pilot needs a permit to conduct aerial work from the Civil Aviation Authority – Without a permit no commercial activities can take place.
What do we use drones for?
SkyEye has invested in custom built aerial mapping and inspection platforms. Our drones carry digital cameras that capture high resolution images. We use photogrammetry to process those images in to detailed orthographic images and digital terrain models.
