In 2004, the FAA created the Sport Pilot License to make flying more affordable and accessible. A sport pilot license enables you to earn your license in about half the time and at half the cost as a Private Pilot License, but you are restricted to flying a new category of aircraft called light sport aircraft (LSA). These aircraft have a single engine with a maximum horsepower of 105 and a maximum of 2 seats. A sport pilot license requires 20 hours of training and does not require any specific medical exam if you hold a valid driver’s license. FAA knowledge and practical exams are also required.
