An alternative to FTA’s Integrated Flight Deck Programme is to take a modular course.

If you’re looking for a career as a commercial airline pilot, this approach still allows you to go from Zero to Frozen ATPL, but enables you to set the pace. This is a popular choice for students who want to alternate between training and part- or full-time employment.

You can also simply take individual courses, such as the Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL), subject to meeting the course pre-requisites.

Modular route to Frozen ATPL

Students following the modular route complete several individual courses until they achieve all qualifications, licences and ratings for their Frozen ATPL, which enables them to apply for a First Officer position at a commercial airline.


The duration depends on the individual’s pace. As a guide, students on full-time attendance generally complete within 24 months. (The integrated training programme typically takes approximately 16 months.)


Training modules

To achieve their Frozen ATPL, students need to complete the following modular courses. Click on a course to find out more:


PRIVATE PILOT LICENCE (PPL)

Overview: Do you want to pilot a plane for private use, or as part of your Frozen ATPL training? The EASA-PPL allows unrestricted flying throughout Europe. It is the most flexible of the PPL options, and is the preferred choice for commercial pilot students following the Modular Route.


Duration: 4-6 weeks full-time, longer if taken part-time.


Course breakdown:


Ground school: multiple-choice examinations

Total flying: 45 hours

Dual flying: 25-35 hours

Solo flying: 10 hours

Pre-requisites:


Current EASA class 2 medical certificate before first solo flight

Minimum age: 18

NIGHT RATING (NR)

Overview: Qualify to fly between official night (30 minutes after sunset) and official day (30 minutes before sunrise). Requiring only five hours of flying in our Diamond DA40s, the Night Rating course is the perfect addition to a PPL.


Duration: 5 hours of flying, 3 of which must be completed with an instructor.


Course breakdown:

5 hours of night flying, 1 hour must be dual navigation

5 solo flights, including a night take-off and landing each time

No ground or flight tests

HOUR BUILDING (HB)

Overview: Build up your hours and develop your flying skills to the standards required of a commercial pilot.


Duration: 20-100 hours, depending on requirements.

AIRLINE TRANSPORT PILOT LICENCE (ATPL) GROUND SCHOOL

ATPL Ground School

 Overview: Complete the ground school training required for commercial pilots at our dedicated ATPL Ground School Academy. FTA’s highly qualified and experienced instructors use the most up-to-date Bristol training materials covering the latest EASA learning objectives. Our ATPL Ground School is a full time (FT) course.


Duration: 21 weeks FT


Course breakdown:


Section 1 (7 weeks FT)

This phase covers: Meteorology, Aircraft General Knowledge, Air Law, IFR communications, VFR communications. Students take 5 examinations at CAA.


Section 2 (7 weeks FT)

This phase covers: Principles of Flight, Instrumentation, Performance, Flight Planning. Students take 4 examinations at CAA.


Section 3 (7 weeks FT)

This phase covers: Operational Procedures, General Navigation, Radio Navigation, Human Performance & Limitations, Mass & Balance. Students take 5 examinations at CAA.

MEP RATING

Overview: Are you looking to qualify to fly an aircraft with more than one engine? If you are studying towards a Frozen ATPL, you will need to complete the MEP Rating course before taking the ME Instrument Rating (IR) course. We offer MEP Rating on two aircraft – Diamond DA42 (preferred option for students completing a modular Frozen ATPL) and the Piper PA23 Aztec.


Duration: 6 hours dual flight time and a minimum of 7 hours theoretical studies, followed by theory exam and flight test.


Course breakdown:

2.5 hours dual flight time – completed under normal multi-engine operation conditions

3.5 hours dual flight time – completed on engine failure and asymmetric flying

Minimum 7 hours theoretical studies

Instruction on the DA42 includes tuition on FADEC Garmin G1000 and EFIS systems.

MULTI ENGINE INSTRUMENT RATING (ME IR)

Overview: To fly aircraft under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) in controlled airspace, students at FTA complete our comprehensive EASA Multi Engine Instrument Rating (ME-IR) course. Taught in modern DA40 and DA42 aircraft, using complex systems including FMS, EFIS, GNSS and ADC, this course is the optimal preparation for the Multi Engine Commercial Pilot Licence (ME-CPL).


Duration: 6-8 weeks, depending on weather conditions and candidate skill level. This course can be taken full- or part-time.

Joining and flying an airways system

Standard instrument arrivals and emergency procedures under IFR conditions

EASA PPL or CPL with Night Rating

To pass their Instrument Rating, students must have:


70 hours as pilot-in-command

50 hours PIC cross-country flight time

A flight radiotelephony operator’s licence

MULTI ENGINE COMMERCIAL PILOT LICENCE (ME CPL)

Overview: Gain your Multi Engine Commercial Pilot Licence with FTA. We provide full training on our Garmin G1000-equipped Diamond DA40 and DA42 Twin Star aircraft, coupled with a state-of-the-art and CAA-certified FNPTII Diamond DA42 Twin Star simulator. If you are completing a Frozen ATPL course, we recommend taking your MEP Rating and ME-IR course before your ME-CPL.


Duration: 3-6 weeks, depending on weather conditions and candidate skill level. This course can be taken full- or part-time.

* As per recent European regulations, we recommend candidates have at least 180 hours, including a minimum of 100 hours as pilot-in-command before starting the course.

To pass their ME-CPL, students must have:


20 hours of cross-country flight time

1 of the cross-country flights must have been at least 300nm, and included two full stop landings at two different aerodromes

ME-CPL for non ME-IR holders: £6,995 inc vat

MULTI CREW COOPERATION (MCC)

Overview: Develop the knowledge, skills and attitude required to operate a multi-crew aircraft. Our comprehensive MCC course combines classroom and simulator training, delivered by experienced instructors. This course will give you an advantage if you’re thinking of undertaking a Jet Type Rating and/or a Line Training programme.


Duration: 10 days

Aircraft handling in normal and abnormal operations, within a multi-crew environment

Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
