FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATE, FI (A)

Overview: This course will enable you to become a qualified flight instructor, upon successful completion you will be awarded a UK CAA FI (A) certificate with IRI (A) and CRI (A) restrictions.

Restrictions: The FI (A) awarded carries IRI (A) and CRI (A) restrictions. Courses to remove the IRI (A) and CRI (A) are available, and we recommend you contact us to discuss the options in more detail.

Duration: 4-8 weeks (full time).


Course breakdown:

Ground Training –


FTAs ground instruction includes 125 hours of theoretical knowledge instruction. This covers the following subjects:

Air Law

Airplane General Knowledge

Flight Performance and Planning

Human Performance and Limitations

Meteorology

Navigation

Operational Procedures

Principles of Flight and Communications

Flight Training –


At least 30 hours of flight instruction, of which 25 hours will be dual flight instruction. The remaining 5 hours may be mutual flying, that is 2 student instructors flying together to practice flight demonstrations.


Prerequisites:

An applicant for an FI (A) certificate should:

(a) Have received at least 10 hours of instrument flight instruction on the appropriate aircraft category, of which not more than 5 hours may be instrument ground time in an FSTD

(b) Have completed 20 hours of VFR cross-country flight on the appropriate aircraft category as PIC

(c) Hold at least a CPL (A)

(d) Have completed at least 30 hours on single-engine piston powered airplanes of which at least 5 hours shall have been completed during the 6 months preceding the pre-entry flight test set out in FCL.930.FI (a)

(e) Have completed a VFR cross-country flight as PIC, including a flight of at least 540 km (300 NM) in the course of which full stop landings at 2 different aerodromes shall be made

(f) Have passed a specific pre-entry flight test with an FIC instructor within the 6 months preceding the start of the course, to assess their ability to undertake the course. This pre-entry flight test shall be based on the proficiency check for class and type ratings as set out in Appendix 9 to Part FCL

The course costs £9,595 and takes place in Teruel, Spain.

Upon successful completion of the training, a skill test will be taken with a Flight Instructor Examiner (FIE). This must be carried out within 6 months of the completion of the training and failure to do so will result in the need for extra training.


The final test fee and aircraft hire (for the test) is additional, and we suggest a budget of approximately £650.

FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR NIGHT RATING COURSE, FI (NR)

Overview: This course is for Flight Instructors who wish to give instruction at night. To do this they must hold a night rating and have demonstrated the ability to teach for the night rating to an FIC instructor.

Duration: Minimum 3 hours

Course breakdown:

Training –

There are no formal ground or flight training requirements prior to taking the night instructional assessment. However, the FI must complete a short course of tuition. This is made up 2 hours theoretical training with an FIC instructor (as a minimum).

Night Instructional Assessment –

The applicant will be required to conduct a pre-flight briefing and airborne lesson chosen from the syllabus of the night rating. The applicant will be assessed by an FIC instructor qualified to teach for the night rating. The flight should last approximately 1 hour.

Prerequisites:

Before carrying out the night instructional assessment the applicant shall:

(a) Hold at least the licence and the rating for which flight instruction is to be given

(b) Be entitled to act as PIC on the aircraft during flight instruction

(b) Hold a night rating

(e) Hold an FI certificate

(f) Complies with the night experience requirement of Part FCL060 (b)(2)


Part FCL.060 (b)(2) States that a pilot shall not operate an aircraft in commercial air transport or carrying passengers as PIC at night unless he/she:

(a) Has carried out in the preceding 90 days at least 1 take-off, approach and landing at night as a pilot flying in an aircraft of the same type or class or an FFS representing that type or class

OR

(b) Holds an IR

Assessment:

There is no assessment of competence required for this rating. An end of course completion certificate will be presented, and a recommendation is made by the FIC instructor for removal of the No Night Restriction.


Validity:

Remains valid as long at the FI certificate remains valid.


FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR INSTRUMENT RATING INSTRUCTOR COURSE, FI (IRI)

Overview: The addition of the Instrument Rating Instructor (IRI) to the FI certificate allows the holder to instruct for the UK IMC Rating / IR (Restricted) and the IR on single pilot SE aircraft. To be able to teach on single pilot ME aircraft the FI must also hold ME instructional privileges.

Duration: 1-2 Weeks

Course Breakdown:

Ground Training –

10 hours of technical training including revision of instrument theoretical knowledge, the preparation of lesson plans and the development of classroom instructional skills.

Flight Training –

5 hours of flight instruction on an aircraft, FFS, FTD 2/3 or FNPT II.


Prerequisites:

An applicant for a FI IRI certificate shall:

(a) Hold at least the licence and the rating for which flight instruction is to be given

(b) Be entitled to act as PIC on the aircraft during flight instruction

(c) Have flown at least 200 hours flight time under IFR, of which up to 50 hours may be instrument ground time in a FFS, FTD 2/3 or FNPT II

On successful completion of the training a recommendation will be made for the applicant to complete the assessment of competence. This must be carried out within 6 months of completion of the training. Failure to do so will result in the need for extra training. The assessment of competence will be conducted by an FIE.

FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR MULTI ENGINE COURSE, FI (ME)

Overview: Flight Instructors (FI) who want to instruct flying in multi-engine (ME) aircraft need to complete the FI ME course.

Duration: 1-2 Weeks

Course Breakdown:

Ground Training –

10 hours of technical training including revision of technical knowledge, the preparation of lesson plans and the development of classroom/simulator instructional skills.

Flight Training –

5 hours of flight instruction in multi-engine aircraft.

Prerequisites:

An applicant for a FI certificate for multi-engine aircraft shall:

(a) Hold at least the licence and the rating for which flight instruction is to be given

(b) Be entitled to act as PIC on the aircraft during flight instruction

(c) Have flown at least 500 hours flight time as pilot of aircraft

(d) Have flown at least 30 hours as PIC on the applicable type or class of aircraft

CLASS RATING INSTRUCTOR SINGLE ENGINE, CRI (SE)

Overview: The holder of a CRI certificate can carry out instruction for a single engine instrument, towing or aerobatic rating.

Duration: 2-3 Weeks

Course Breakdown:

Ground Training –

35 hours of ground tuition including 25 hours of teaching and learning and 10 hours of technical training including revision of technical knowledge, the preparation of lesson plans and the development of classroom/simulator instructional skills.

Flight Training –

3 hours of flight instruction in single engine aircraft.


Prerequisites:

An applicant for a CRI certificate for single engine aircraft shall:

(a) Hold at least the licence and the rating for which flight instruction is to be given

(b) Be entitled to act as PIC on the aircraft during flight instruction

(c) Have flown at least 300 hours flight time as pilot of aircraft*

(d) Have flown at least 30 hours as PIC on the applicable type or class of aircraft

*Not including micro lights

CLASS RATING INSTRUCTOR MULTI ENGINE, CRI (ME)

Overview: This course allows an FI (A) instructor to teach the Multi engine CRI. Successful completion of the FI (A), IRI and CRI (ME) elevates the qualified Flight Instructor (with FI (A)) to ‘Advanced instructor’ status and as such, will be highly sought after.

Duration: 2-3 Weeks

Course Breakdown:

Ground Training –

35 hours of ground tuition including 25 hours of teaching and learning and 10 hours of technical training including revision of technical knowledge, the preparation of lesson plans and the development of classroom/simulator instructional skills.

Flight Training –

5 hours of flight instruction in multi-engine aircraft.

Prerequisites:

An applicant for a CRI certificate for multi-engine aircraft shall:

(a) Hold at least the licence and the rating for which flight instruction is to be given

(b) Be entitled to act as PIC on the aircraft during flight instruction

(c) Have flown at least 500 hours flight time as pilot of aircraft*

(d) Have flown at least 30 hours as PIC on the applicable type or class of aircraft

*Not including micro lights

INSTRUMENT RATING INSTRUCTOR, IRI

Overview: The Instrument Rating Instructor (IRI) aircraft certificate allows the holder to instruct for the UK IMC Rating / IR (Restricted) and the IR on single pilot SE aircraft. To be able to teach the IR on a SP ME aircraft the IRI must comply with FCL.915.CRI (a) –

FCL.915.CRI (a) –

(1) 500 hours flight time as a pilot on aircraft

(2) 30 hours as PIC on the applicable class or type of aircraft

Applicants for further instructor certificates may be credited with the teaching and learning skills already demonstrated for the instructor certificate held

Duration: 2-3 Weeks

Course Breakdown:

Ground Training –

35 hours of ground tuition including 25 hours of teaching and learning and 10 hours of technical training including revision of instrument theoretical knowledge, the preparation of lesson plans and the development of classroom instructional skills.

Flight Training –

At least 10 hours of flight instruction on an aircraft, FFS, FTD 2/3 or FPNT II.


Prerequisites:

An applicant for an IRI (A) certificate shall:

(a) Hold at least the licence and the rating for which flight instruction is to be given

(b) Be entitled to act as PIC on the aircraft during flight instruction

(c) Have completed at least 800 hours of flight time under IFR, of which at least 400 hours shall be in aircraft. If the rating is to be for multi-engine aircraft, the candidate must meet the requirements of Para FCL.915.CRI (a).
