FAA regulations require an instrument student pilot to have a current FAA Private or Commercial Pilot Certificate with an Airplane Single Engine Land category and class rating. They must be able to read, write, and speak the English language, and have at least a current FAA 3rd class Medical, and receive a TSA clearance (if required) prior to beginning the flight portion of this course. There are no prerequisites for beginning the ground portion of this course. Prior to completing the Instrument Pilot Rating Course (ASEL), the student must meet at least the minimum hourly requirements.
FAA Part 61 Instrument Pilot flight training requires 40 hours of logged instrument time (specified below), at least 20 of which must be in airplanes, and 50 hours of PIC cross-country time logged. It is suggested that most of the PIC cross-country time should be completed prior to stage 2 of the instrument course.
The total time for a full time student to complete this course normally takes about 8 weeks. Allowances should be made for unforeseen circumstances like bad weather.
