Pilots seeking to obtain the FAA Certified Flight Instructors (CFI) license must hold at least an FAA Commercial Pilot license with Instrument Rating and a current FAA medical certificate. There is no minimum training time required by the regulations, but we recommend the course to cover at least 10 hours of flight instruction right seat time, and 30 hours of ground instruction, along with a lot of home study and preparation.
The Fundamentals of Instruction FAA knowledge Test (FOI) is required for initial CFI’s (some exclusions may apply) along with the appropriate CFI or CFII FAA Knowledge test must be completed prior to initial FAA checkride. These test are available through Lasergrade Testing Center at Voyager Aviation.
Some will take the ASEL CFI and others will take the CFII as the Initial checkride, depending on their prior experience. If you are a recent SEL-Commercial student, then the CFI is suggested first. If you are an active ATP, then the CFII is suggested first.
