FAA regulations require a ATP candidate to have a current FAA Commercial Certificate and an instrument rating, and hold a current FAA 1st class Medical. They must be at least 23 years of age, and able to read, write, and speak the English language. At the time of the FAA Practical Test, the student must have gained a minimum of 1500 total logged flight hours, which must include 500 hours of cross-country flight time, 100 hours of night flight time, 75 hours instrument flight time, and at least 250 hours of PIC. Specific requirements can be verified in FAR §61.153 and 61.159.
It is suggested that ATP candidates log 1500 hours of flight time prior to this course. The total time for a full time student to complete this course depends on their type of experience, and/or if previous study has been done for the knowledge test. Generally, candidates enroll after they have pre-studied for the knowledge test, and arrive ready to take the exam. In this case, the course should be approximately 3 – 5 days. Every effort is made by Voyager to have the practical test examiner on standby. Allowances should be made for unforeseen circumstances like bad weather.
