FAA Requirements for Private Pilot License

You must be at least 16 years old to fly solo (in a glider or balloon) and at least 17 years old to receive your private pilot license. You must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.

Hold a U.S. student pilot certificate, sport pilot license, or recreational pilot license.

Get a medical certificate from an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) designated by the FAA.

You must get a minimum of 40 hours of flight training which must include at least:

20 hours of flight training from an authorized flight instructor including:

3 hours of cross-country flight training

3 hours of instruments

3 hours of night flying

including a 100 nautical mile round trip

10 night takeoffs and 10 landings to a full stop involving a  a flight in the traffic pattern

3 hours of instruction with an authorized instructor within 60 days prior to your practical test

10 hours of solo flight including:

at least 5 hours of cross-country including a 150 nautical mile round trip

3 takeoffs and 3 full-stop landings at an airfield with a control tower

Do not invest in your private pilot license until you join a flying club. The most convenient way to get your flight time is enroll in flight school or join a flying club.

Examinations

Pass the written exam with a score of 70% or better

Complete a check ride with an FAA-certified examiner who will accompany you on the flight.
