The history of US Airways has been a history of mergers. Founded in 1937 as American Airways in Pittsburgh, it has operated its dense route network, mostly the eastern states, under the name of Allegheny Airlinessince 1953. Then, Allegheny bought one airline after the other, among them Piedmont Airlines in 1993. The original of this model, registration N417US, came to US Airwaysas result of that merger. It was launched in March 1989 by Piedmont.
