The instrument rating adds massive competency and functionality to a private or commercial pilot license.  Simple things like being able to ascend or descend through a thin layer of clouds or fog, make the rating extremely useful when you have to make it to your destination. Being able to ‘punch through the clouds’, and ‘shoot an approach’ are important in the daily routine of an active pilot. Ultimately, whether you use the rating or not, an IFR rating makes you a much more competent pilot by havin a deeper understanding of the aircraft instruments, and knowledge of the Instrument Flight Rules (IFR).
