A Night Rating is an endorsement that can be added onto your Private Pilot Licence. It allows you to fly at night and experience the exhilarating feeling that comes from flying in darkness. This type of VFR flying offers challenges that require an advanced training in instrument flying and radio navigation skills. It also requires advanced training and skill in interpretation and application of weather reports and forecasts.

Prerequisites

To apply for the Night Rating you must hold a valid Private Pilot Licence.

Experience Requirements

To acquire the Night Rating, you must have a minimum of 20 hours in aeroplanes, including:

10 hours of night flying time including:

5 hours of dual, including 2 hours dual night cross-country

5 hours of solo, including 10 takeoffs and landings

10 hours of dual instrument time (includes 5 hours acquired with your PPL)

The ground portion of the training includes a general review of Canadian Airspace, airport and aircraft requirements, weather requirements for VFR night flight, interpreting and applying weather products, instrument flying techniques, and operation of ADF, VOR, and GPS navigation systems.

The Rating is given by Transport Canada on the recommendation of the Flight Instructor, who must certify that all the requirements have been met. There is no written or flight exam.

Training Facilities

The Squamish Airport is NOT equipped with lights, therefore night training is conducted at airports such as Sechelt, Pitt Meadows and Langley. Overnight accommodations may be arranged as required for an additional charge.
