This licence is generally for people due to health reasons cannot get a Class 2 medical. It is only valid in the UK and you will be restricted to flying in good weather by day.

The NPPL, however, requires only a minimum of 35 hours flying time, of which 10 hours are spent solo. This reduces the cost of achieving a pilot’s licence within the UK but please note that the 35 hours is only a minimum number of hours, and some students may take more than this before they are ready for a test.

Another advantage of the NPPL is that the medical requirements are reduced to those of an HGV driver medical. Therefore, if you find it is not possible to get a CAA medical for the grant of a PPL, then the NPPL is the one for you.

The NPPL requires you to complete all of the same ground examinations as the PPL and to complete the Skills Test at the end of the course. You won’t be able to gain an IMC rating, which allows you to fly within or above clouds, or a night rating if you hold an NPPL.
