Introduction

Delve into the history of our Airport. The first long-haul flight in 1961, the piggy-back landing of the Space Shuttle or the opening of the new Terminal: fascinating moments which also showed how the dream of flying has since become reality for more and more people – also in Rhineland.

2014

“Travis” ensures transparency:  Visitors to the Cologne Bonn Airport website can now follow all aircraft movements in real time. Small aircraft icons on a digital map provide information relevant for flights, such as the flight path, altitude, speed, airline, type of aircraft and destination. The individual noise levels of every aircraft movement measured at the Airport’s monitoring stations can also be seen. (18.03).

“Stern B“ lighter and more inviting: The star-shaped check-in area B in Terminal 1 has been re-opened for passengers after three months of renovation work. This concluded the modernisation of Terminal 1. (20.03.)

The globally operating logistics enterprise UPS celebrates the official opening of the 200-million USD extension of its European Air Hub at Cologne Bonn Airport. (24.03.)

Cologne/Bonn wins the renowned Skytrax-Award: The Airport lands first prize in the category “Best Regional Airport Europe” for the first time in its history. This means that, according to the passengers, Cologne Bonn Airport is the best European Airport among the airports which are not an inter-continental hub. (27.03.)

In both August and September, the passenger volume at Cologne Bonn Airport amounted to more than one million passengers per month – something last achieved in September 2011. Exactly 1,033,371 flight passengers took off or landed in Cologne/Bonn in September, which makes it the strongest month since September 2010. (09.10.)

The Irish low-cost air carrier Ryanair reinforces its position. With the start of the winter timetable, the airline opens a base at Cologne/Bonn and stations one aircraft here. At the same time Ryanair expands its route network at Cologne Bonn Airport, offering five new scheduled connections to Dublin, London-Stansted, Madrid, Riga and Rome. (28.10.)

ZERO-G a great visitor attraction: The A300 ZERO-G, which was used by the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) - among others - as a reduced gravity aircraft following an (approximately parabolic) flight path, landed after its last flight in Cologne/Bonn. Here it is now a permanent exhibition piece, and visitors to the Airport can be shown round during guided tours. (03.11.)

Condor takes off for the first time to the Cuban resort Varadero. In the winter timetable 2014/15, the holiday airline offers a once-a-week flight with a Boeing 767-300 to the holiday destination. This is the first long-haul flight from Cologne/Bonn in some years. (04.11.)

Low-cost long-haul flights from the end of 2015: Deutsche Lufthansa announces that Cologne/Bonn will be the home base of the Group’s new low-cost, long-haul fleet. From the end of 2015, they will offer low-priced intercontinental flights under the brand name Eurowings from Cologne/Bonn. The destinations include Florida, Indian Ocean islands and Southern Africa. (05.12.)
