Five enthusiasts from the Williamson are founded the Williamson Flying Club
in 1956. The first club aircraft was an Aeronica Champ, which was operated
from the Palmyra airport. The Williamson-Sodus airport was originally a farm
and the first 1800-foot runway was seeded in July 1957. Over the years the
runway has been upgraded and is a hard surface asphalt system with modern
lighting and taxiways still under improvement. By 1975 the club had expanded
to 6 aircraft.
Today's flying club is an incorporated organization of more than one hundred
and forty members. One full time and several part time flight instructors
provide training for private pilot ratings as well as instruction for more
advanced Commercial, CFI, and IFR ratings.
The clubs stated purpose is to promote and encourage interest in aviation
and teach members to improve their flying skills. For an opportunity to join
the Williamson Flying Club ask any member for additional information.
