In addition to our Commercial-off-the Shelf simulator product, HeliFlight-R, ART produces custom simulators to satisfy specific customer requirements. ART can provide the following subsystems, and any combination thereof, integrated with our flight dynamics models and tested to any desired FAA/JAA certification requirements.
Control Loader Platform (Crew Station base)
ART can provide a control loader platform with electric control loaders, linkages and pilot sticks and grips to satisfy any desired aircraft configuration. The loaders will be interfaced to the flight dynamics model provided by ART and tuned to the loading characteristics of the aircraft. Typically three control loaders are provided for fixed wing simulators and four control loaders are provided for rotary wing simulators.
Crew Station
ART can provide a Crew Station for any desired aircraft with simulated instruments and switches. The Crew Station will be interfaced to the flight dynamics model provided by ART. The combined Crew Station and Flight Dynamics Model will be tested to any desired FAA/JAA certification requirements. The Crew Station can also be integrated, tested and delivered with the Control Loader Platform.
Avionics
ART simulators can be provided with either simulated or stimulated avionics. ART can provide avionic simulator solutions for the most advanced aircraft glass cockpits. ART can also provide re-hosted avionic software when available from the manufacturer. Avionic simulations are of the highest fidelity and can be developed from an aircraft data package or reversed engineered.
Visual Display System
The Visual Display System includes the Image Generation System, the Projectors, the Geometry Correction and Edge Blending Controller, the Projection Screen, and the Visual Data base. Each component of the Visual Display System is customized to the simulator requirements.
Image Generation System
ART utilizes a Common Image Generator Interface (CIGI) format for communicating with Image Generators so any commercial Image Generator that is CIGI compliant can be used with ART Flight Dynamics Models. The specific IG will be chosen based on certification requirements and cost constraints.
Projectors
ART uses LCoS projectors to provide the maximum available contrast ratio and to eliminate the “wire mesh” appearance characteristic of LCD projectors. The projectors provided by ART support High Definition resolution and wide angle lenses are used, as required to provide the necessary screen coverage and resolution. The number of projectors is tailored to the required field of view.
Geometry Correction and Edge Blending Controller
Projection onto a spherical surface requires modification of the projected image to avoid distortion. Also blending of the projector images is required wher they overlap to provide a seamless display. ART uses dedicated geometry correction and edge blending systems to map the output of the Image Generator into an image appropriate for projection based on the screen geometry. The calibration of these corrections is done using an automated system to achieve maximum fidelity and efficiency.
Projection Screen
ART provides a variety of solutions for the projection screen based on the user’s requirements. An enclosed, light-tight dome with diameters ranging from 10 Ft. to 30 Ft. is provided using carbon fiber shell elements for strength and light weight. These domes are designed to be mounted on motion platforms so they can be delivered with motion systems or upgraded to motion systems at a future time. Collimated screens are available for Level D fixed wing aircraft applications. A partial dome can be provided to accommodate the use of interchangeable simulator Crew Stations.
Visual Data base
ART can provide geo-specific visual data bases that are consistent with then seleced Image Generator, for any desired location. The visual data base includes micro-texture, geospecific cultural features, and the elevation and slope data required for landing gear interaction. Ground friction can also be included as a function of position and brownout/vapor fro downwash interaction with sand/water can also be included.
Instructor/Operator Console
ART has developed the hardware and software required for the Instructor/Operator Station (IOS). The IOS includes three monitors to repeat the Out-the-Window displays, a monitor to track the instrument displays, a monitor for an external view display and the control monitor for IOS functions. A joystick and levers allow the instructor to fly the simulator from the IOS console or to fly additional aircraft as part of a collective training scenario. An onboard IOS is also provided to allow closer monitoring of the simulator session by the Operator/Instructor. An intercom and headsets support communication with the Crew Station and the onboard IOS. The IOS provides total control and monitoring of the simulator session including starting and stopping of the simulation, initializing the flight vehicle, recording and playback of the simulation session, and the initiation of malfunctions.
Motion Platform
ART can provide motion platforms with these custom simulators. The size and type of motion platform is based on the simulator requirements and can range from an actuator stroke of 24 inches to an actuator stroke of 60 inches. Payloads can range from 4000 pounds to 32,000 pounds. The motion system will be tuned to provide the maximum performance for a specific model and simulator configuration. Safety interlocks will be installed to minimize risk to personnel.
