More than 2.3 million passengers flew through BWI Marshall Airport in June, a record for the month, officials said.

The passenger volume represented a 7.6 percent increase from the same month last year. International travel increased about 15 percent in June.

Buoyed by passenger growth in several of the airlines that fly through it, BWI has set monthly records in each of the last 12 months.

about 24.7 million passengers flew into or out of the airport over the past year, officials said. The airport set a record in 2015 with nearly 24 million passengers.

BWI CEO Ricky Smith attributed the airport's growth to new airline service and low airfares. In particular, airport officials cited Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Air Canada, British Airways, Condor, and WOW air as airlines that have seen an uptick in passenger traffic.

"The continued growth and new records at BWI reflect our strong economy in Maryland, and our administration will continue to find ways to encourage this success," Gov. Larry Hogan said in a statement.
