The theme for the 67th annual International Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany, is “Future Now.” As such, there is a wide variety of concept automobiles on display this week, from the celebrated Mercedes-AMG Project ONE hypercar to the eyebrow-raising and oddly-named Thunder Power SUV. And in a class of its own is AeroMobil’s flying car.

It’s fitting that the Slovakian company would display its pricy concept at an event devoted to the future of the automotive industry, because 2017 has been nothing if not the Year of the Flying Car. Companies are locked in a heated race to make the Jetsons lifestyle — or air taxi service, at the very least — a reality, but AeroMobil is getting ahead of the pack by focusing on the high-end market. That’s why all news of AeroMobil’s progress comes with an emphasis on the vehicle’s price tag: $1.2 million.

Of course, as the company has stated several times, AeroMobil isn’t focused solely on luxury. The company believes it can “take the lead in designing flying cars for MaaS (Mobility-as-a-Service) and personal air transport,” but AeroMobil still hangs it hat on the idea that the 4.0 model combines the “best of automotive and aerospace innovation.” Needless to say, the company’s future success in personal air transport will likely rely on the success (and sales) of it flagship aircraft.

AeroMobil is taking pre-orders for the flying car in Frankfurt. It isn't clear how many, if any, have been ordered thus far, but the company plans to produce a limited amount. Perhaps that is simply a strategy to drum up demand, or maybe it will be limited because exclusivity is a highlight of luxury. Regardless, we will have a better idea when, or if, AeroMobil’s flying car goes into production next year.

The latest version of AeroMobil's flying car is on display at the International Motor Show Germany in Frankfurt.
