United Airlines started nonstop flights to the New York area this afternoon as officials called for Chattanooga area fliers to use the service.
"We need to make sure business and leisure (travel) supports it," said Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger as the airline launched the service between Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport.
United is offering two nonstops a day between the cities, and the carrier began flights to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport as well.
"This is a significant milestone for our region, and we are excited about the impact this service will make on our community," said Chattanooga Airport CEO Terry Hart to a large group of travelers and officials at Lovell Field prior to the flight.
The airline will use 50-seat Embraer ERJ-145 regional jets for the service.
Dan Jacobson, who heads the Airport Authority, encouraged Chattanoogans to use the flights.
"We are constantly working to understand the travel needs of the community and strategically seek the best opportunities to foster economic growth," he said.
