digEcor is debuting its GLIDE in-seat power solution with partner IFPL on AirAsia’s Airbus A320neos, a step change for the company, which is better known for its embedded and portable in-flight entertainment systems. digEcor worked with IFPL and Mirus Aircraft Seating to offer a USB outlet that could be integrated into the armrest. The seat box fits into the seat pan itself.
“This is a big deal for us on a number of fronts,” says David Withers, chief executive, digEcor. “Firstly, this is a big order and recognizes the value of our USB power product. Secondly, this is a long-term order and further secures us as a stable long-term partner in this industry.”
In-seat power has quickly become an important passenger amenity, bolstered by bring-your-own-device trends and the adoption of in-flight connectivity. “I think there is acceptance that USB power is increasingly a passenger expectation, regardless of the carrier category,” Withers says. “Many low-cost carriers have looked to Wi-Fi as an entertainment option.”
This news follows an announcement, made by the low-cost carrier during Aircraft Interiors Expo in April, that it would install Mirus’ Hawk slimline seat on more than 300 A320neos. The lightweight economy seat is designed for short range, single-aisle aircraft, offers a six-inch (10-degree) recline and 18 inches between arms.
During the press event at Aircraft Interiors Expo, Tony Fernandes, group CEO of AirAsia, foreshadowed his interest in adopting in-seat power for the Hawk seats: “In terms of in-flight entertainment, we’ll put iPads and tablets on the table; we’re looking at in-seat power, things like that that we’ve always wanted as cheaper options.”
