Sikorsky has named LiquidPiston as the seventh Entrepreneurial Challenge winner, the Lockheed Martin subsidiary said. The competition, driven by Sikorsky Innovations, also awarded Spinar America a special recognition.
The challenge aims to facilitate technological innovation that could translate into the vertical flight market. Bloomfield, Connecticut-based LiquidPiston uses its patented HEHC, a thermodynamic high efficiency hybrid cycle, to develop engines that are compact, lightweight, quiet, efficient, scalable, multifuel capable and have low vibration levels.
Spinar America provides media and content creation with virtual reality and augmented reality technology. It was awarded for its application to austere operating environments, like remote aircraft maintenance, using Epson Moverio Augmented Reality Smart Glasses. The company is based in Dover, Delaware, and is present in the Mexican and South American markets.
LiquidPiston received a $25,000 cash prize and the chance to explore opportunities for its engine technology with the Sikorsky product line. Spinar America did not receive a cash prize, but Sikorsky has recognized its potential, saying it will consider applications for the technology should it align with current needs.
