The FAA responded to the accident site on Friday to conduct an investigation. That work was completed by noon.

The aircraft has been removed and stored by the insurance company.

The pilot remains stable with no further complications.

Witnesses to the crash of a small private plane at Shreveport's Downtown Airport on Thursday afternoon said the plane went out of control as the pilot was aborting a landing attempt and pulling up to try a second approach. The plane appeared to stall, they said.

The Piper PA-28 craft hit the ground, flipped and landed upside down. The pilot, who was the lone occupant of the plane, was helped out by witnesses and others who sprinted to his aid.

The name of the pilot had not been released Friday morning. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash, which destroyed the plane.

Mitchell Whitehurst, a witnesses, said the pilot was attempting to land when he apparently realized he didn't have the right approach. He was pulling up to go around and attempt another landing when the plane appeared to stall -- crashing to the left of the runway and narrowly missing another plane on a taxiway, Whitehurst said.

Whitehurst said he and others ran to the crash site and pulled pieces of the cockpit away from the pilot so he could crawl out of the wreckage, Whitehurst said.

They said the pilot was conscious throughout but havin trouble breathing. He was worried about his plane but they told him not to worry about it because it could be replaced.

Shreveport Director of Airports Henry Thompson said the pilot was practicing landings when the crash happened.

"One of our local based pilots was conducting practice landings at the airport here. At some point, there were complications and the aircraft ended up in the in-field area near the runway there," said Thompson.

Fire Department spokesman Fred Sanders said the pilot suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The accident happened about 2:15 p.m.  The airport was closed to air traffic after the crash.
