A U.S. Army National Guard helicopter unit could get a base in New Mexico. Las Cruces Sun-News reported that a new facility, which would be built west of Las Cruces, has been proposed.

According to the report, the proposal is for a 35,000-sqare-foot readiness center for $14.5 million. It would serve C Company, 3rd Battalion, 140th Aviation Regiment and its Eurocopter UH-72s. The unit currently operates out of the airport, according to the report.

The New Mexico National Guard already has a readiness center located near the Las Cruces International Airport. However, it does not serve the aviation unit. The new facility would be based near the airport. According to the report, it could feature additional hangar space and space for training, among other items.

$8.6 million has already been secured for multiple military projects, Las Cruces Sun-News reported. A portion of those funds is set to go toward the new facility. Construction is reportedly slated to start in February, finishing October 2019. The report said that the unit is likely to continue leasing the hangar space it currently has at the airport, due to a need for space.
