License Requirements
Commercial Pilot License (CPL)
The Commercial Pilot License is the first license level in Canada wher you may work for hire, subject to the provisions and limitations of the Canadian Aviation Regulations. A CPL is recognized internationally and trans-border flights are authorized. With additional training, the holder of a CPL may also obtain addition ratings including a multi-engine rating, instrument rating, and aircraft type ratings. Unless specifically prohibited on the license document, the holder of a CPL may also exercise the privileges of a Night Rating and a VFR Over the Top Rating. At any time, the holder of a Commercial Pilot License may exercise all privileges accorded to the holder of a Private Pilot License.
Commercial Pilot License – Ground School Instruction
Transport Canada requires that all applicants for a Commercial Pilot License complete a Commercial Pilot Ground School of not less than 80 hours of instruction. The Commercial Pilot Ground School offered by Sealand Aviation is taught by experienced, Transport Canada licensed instructors and provides 103 hours of ground instruction covering all required subject areas. A detailed list of these requirements is provided by the Transport Canada Study and Reference Guide. Key subject areas that will be covered during the Ground School include:
Air Regulations
Commercial Air Operations
Aerodynamics
Theory of Flight
Meteorology
Airframes, Engines and Systems
Flight Instruments
Radio and Electronic Theory
Navigation
Flight Operations
Aeromedicine and Human Factors
Pilot Decision Making
The Commercial Pilot Ground School Course offered by Sealand Aviation has been designed to merge with the Private Pilot Ground School Course. This approach offers some distinct advantages over offering a dedicated course for a limited number of CPL candidates:
reduced cost to the CPL candidate (based on per-capita seating)
ease of scheduling and increased frequency of ground school serials
ability of CPL candidates to offer experiences and assistance to PPL candidates
ensures that CPL candidates who are not current/recent in terms of ground school instruction are provided with a solid knowledge base from which to prepare for the CPL written examination and flight test.
Commercial License candidates will be assessed for depth and currency of knowledge. On the basis of this assessment, the student will be directed to attend specific lectures from the Private Pilot Ground School Syllabus and/or to undertake supervised self-study of specific subject areas. Additional material unique to the CPL is taught through a series of Commercial Difference Classes that are added to the schedule for those students pursuing the Commercial Pilot License.
Commercial Pilot License – Flight Instruction
A Licensed Flight Instructor will provide all of your flight instruction. This instruction will follow a Transport Canada approved syllabus that is broken into 4 Phases and 31 individual Lesson Plans. The structure of these lesson plans is designed to take you from the basic skills you have developed as a licensed Private Pilot, refine these skills, and develop additional skills that you will require as a Commercial Pilot.
