R/V Maritime Maid is an 86 ft. steel vessel operating in Alaskan waters since l987, providing helicopter-assisted research charter. It was refit in 2009 - including hull to ABS standards, new house, 2 generators and main engines rebuilt and electronics upgrade. Since 2000, the vessel's efforts have focused on scientific studies, seismic and volcano research. Originally built as a pelagic fishing vessel, the "Maritime Maid" was converted to a research vessel capable of operating for extended periods providing comfort and safety to its occupants. She has an 8,000 mile range, burns 300 gallons per day at cruise and 100 gallons per day at anchor. She has a 600 gal/day fresh water desalination system, washer/dryer and ample dry and cold storage. In its standard configuration the boat carries one aluminum auxiliary skiff.
Staterooms
There are five staterooms for passengers. All are separate from galley and wheelhouse. Four staterooms sleep three and one sleeps two. All have drawers and storage space for personal gear. Crew quarters with 4 bunks in the foc’sle are separate from the passengers.
Galley
The vessel has a full service galley with modern electric range/oven, 47 cubic foot refrigerator, 54 cubic foot freezer, and additional fridge and freezer space on deck. Full size deep-well sinks, compactor, microwave, and two coffee makers. DVD, VHS, stereo surround sound are available for entertainment or instruction.
Lab
Located under the shelter deck adjacent to the aft living quarters. Used by researchers as main base of operations for computers and office space.
Pilot House
The vessel wheelhouse sits forward on the upper deck with Quarters for the Captain and one crew member. There are port and starboard exit doors accessing the main deck and helipad. It is equipped with modern electronics including two radars, two depth finders, two GPS plotters, two compasses, two VHF radios, two SAT phones, SSB radio, Sailor 150 internet and Sky Tracker. The pilothouse is open to contracting personnel at all times.
Head
There are three bathrooms on board. In the main sleeping area is a bathroom with shower, sink and toilet. Under the shelter deck is a stateroom with a shower, sink and toilet. In the Captain's stateroom is another shower, sink and toilet. The boat is capable of carrying 5,600 gallons of fresh water. There is sufficient water for all passengers to shower daily.
Outside Decks
There are two deck levels. The upper deck accesses the wheelhouse/helipad and carries an aluminum skiff. A two ton Husky crane can launch the skiff from either side of the boat. Ample lifesaving equipment is on board, including immersion suits, type one PFD’s, MOB marking lights, EPIRB, life-rings and two 10-man emergency rafts. The main deck allows access to the lab and shelter deck.
Areas of Operation
Vessel/helicopter operations have been conducted in Alaskan waters from Ketchikan to Attu, St. Matthew Island and Nome.
The “Maritime Maid” is fully licensed by the US Coast Guard, has a current USCG inspection, and has passed all USCG requirements for safety and seaworthiness. Proof of certification available upon request.
The vessel is capable of maintaining a cruising speed of 10 knots.
