The number of passengers at the Orlando International Airport has risen again, with about 41.3 million passengers flying through the airport between August 2016 and the same month last year. That's a 10 percent increase in overall traffic from a year before.
In August, international traffic grew about 10.5 percent over a year ago, with 554,302 fliers. Domestic passenger traffic, meanwhile, grew nearly 7 percent to 2.8 million passengers in August compared with the same time period.
As a result of the record traffic for an airport that was built to accommodate 24 million annual passengers, the airport is expediting screening lines, expanding ticket lobbies, building an additional 2,500-space parking garage and a $1.8 billion south terminal, slated to be complete in 2019.
"As Orlando International Airport continues to attract new airline service and routes, we have been able to maintain a double-digit international passenger growth on a consistent basis," said Frank Kruppenbacher, chairman of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. "This in turn grows this destination and helps to further stimulate the local economy."
