The Croatian Defense Ministry will move forward with public procurement for the overhaul of 10 Russian Helicopter Mi-171Shs, local news outlets report. The Croatian Parliamentary Defense Committee voted unanimously to pass the two-year deal last Wednesday.

Operational licenses for the rotorcraft will expire before May of next year, with the first one set to expire at the end of the month. Official discussion has been sparked as to why the overhaul procurement did not take place sooner. Some ask what Croatia is doing to stay on par with NATO standards, of which it is a member despite the use of Russian machinery.

Reports say the Mi-171Shs were purchased from Moscow in 2007, equipped with weapons systems. The overhaul of one helicopter could take around 10 months. once back in service, the rotorcraft will be returned to the Croatian military.
