Washington state air ambulance service Life Flight Network says a short move of one of its bases will cut its response time by five minutes.

Effective Nov. 23, the company’s Leonardo AW119Kx will be operating out the Southwest Washington Regional Airport in Kelso, Washington, instead of its previous base at PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center in Longview.

Although the move only takes the helicopter two miles, it has been under consideration for several years. It comes as part of Life Flight’s effort to improve its service in the Cowlitz County area. Relocating to the airport also makes the crew’s communication with the ground emergency medical service (EMS) more efficient, allowing them to meet at the airport instead of taking the time to drive through the city streets. The company has no plans to sever its partnership with the medical center.

Along with the Leonardo AW119Kx, the nonprofit operates the Leonardo AW109E, the Airbus Helicopters H135 and other fixed-wing and ground transportation vehicles. Helicopters are operated out of 25 of Life Flight’s 26 bases in the Pacific Northwest.
