On Monday night, Alaska Airlines canceled 35 flights from 6 a.m. to noon on Tuesday due to wintry weather conditions.
Precipitation was expected late Monday night with cold temperatures settling in, creating the potential for ice at the airport and on the aircraft. This requires deicing of planes before they can takeoff.
According to Alaska Airlines, pre-cancelling flights prevents congestion and allows crews to keep up with the workload, especially when deicing is required.
But on Tuesday, an Alaska spokesman told KIRO 7,A number of factors were at play during yesterday’s weather event. We’re doing what we can to help our customers and will do better in the future.
Alaska customers will be notified if their flight has been canceled and passengers are encouraged to check the airline's website or their mobile app before heading to the airport to verify their flight status.
Passengers on other airlines should check their flight status.
On Monday, the airline canceled more than two dozen flights into and out of Seattle because of snow.
