Indonesia’s National Institute of Aeronautics and Space made the first flight of its newest aircraft N219 prototype. On August 16, 2017, the aircraft took off and landed smoothly at the Husein Sastranegara Airport, Bandung, West Java.

The first flight of N219 prototype began at 09.10 am local time and flew for 30 minutes. The 19-passenger plane is being designed primarily to provide better connectivity for remote Indonesian regions with low operating and maintenance costs. It will also be used to carry light cargo and troops, as well as for medical evacuation purposes.

The aircraft also has patriotic value for the island nation. This success proves that this nation is capable of independently designing, testing, certifying and producing national aeronautics products,” the official statement by Indonesia’s National Institute of Aeronautics and Space announces. “This expected to be able to answer the government challenge to drive the national economy in the field of transportation. Primarily is as the connector or enhancer of connectivity of remote areas.”

Since 2014, the development of the aircraft has already cost Indonesian government $40 million, but further investments will be needed. Before the aircraft can enter the market, it first has to be awarded a certification from DKUPPU, Ministry of Transportation. For this purpose, various upcoming tests are still needed, including testing for structures, flight tests, certifications, fall tests, etc.
