  • Flight Simulation

Rheinmetall Defence has long been a vendor of innovative and advanced technologies for flight training. The company participates in many European multi-national flight training programmes such as those for the NH-90, Tiger Attack Helicopter, Eurofighter or the A400M. For all these projects Rheinmetall Defence is providing training solutions ranging from Computer based Training, Part-Task and System Trainers over Cockpit-Procedure and Maintenance Trainers up to Full Mission Simulators.

With the usage of current and established interface protocols these simulation systems can be networked and used in joint-combined training scenarios for network-enabled training.

All the training solutions provided reflect the highly sophisticated and demanding technology in current state-of-the art aircraft systems such as fly-by-wire controls, extended autopilot capabilities, the latest attack and countermeasure technology as well as current sensor technology and fully equipped glass cockpits. And as the company usually starts the design of training media together with the design of the real aircraft system as a concurrent development programme, we are able to provide effective training solutions even before the start of the operational period of the aircraft. This enables manufacturers to evaluate the performance and behaviour of aircraft and systems already in the early design stages or to verify the concepts of operation.

    Full Mission Flight Simulators

Simulation under conditions that are very close to reality: by virtue of the digital 360 degree visual system, takeoff and landing, avoidance and attack maneuvers, flights over difficult terrain give the impression of a real mission.

    Eurofighter (Typhoon) Simulator

Under the Asta ("Aircrew synthetic training aids") programme, the Eurofighter Simulation Systems GmbH (ESS), a joint venture company in which Rheinmetall Defence Electronics (RDE) is taking part, is building Eurofighter flight simulators. ESS supplies full-mission simulators which enable complex scenarios to be practiced, including the threat from surface-to-air missiles or electronic warfare tactics. The simulation concept encompasses full mission simulators of the latest generation with multi-axis motion systems and a high-resolution 360° panoramic out-of-the-window display.

    Tiger Simulator

In cooperation with Thales Training & Simulation Ltd., Rheinmetall Defence Electronics is supplying Tiger attack helicopter simulators for the Franco-German training centre at Le Luc in Southern France. These simulators will enable crews to master the helicopter in its various configurations perfectly. A variety of different mission scenarios can be practised, featuring every detail of a combat engagement. The simulators can be readily modified in order to cover the wide spectrum of helicopter designs and training situations. During the flight training course, student pilots will spend some 70 percent of their time in the simulator.

Tornado Simulator with Avior Laser System

Rheinmetall Defence Electronics is equipping the German Air Force’s Tornado flight and tactical simulators with the Avior visualization system. The retrofit represents a milestone in flight training efficiency and effectiveness. Thanks to the use of laser technology, Avior provides unlimited sharpness of depth, high colour diversity, absolute colour stability and constant colour convergence. As a digital system, it is extremely reliable and requires very little maintenance. Thanks to separation of the projection head and the laser source, the laser system is highly compact and takes up very little space.

    NH 90 PFI

Under the Bundeswehr’s first privately financed pilot training project, Helicopter Flight Training Services GmbH –a joint venture in which Rheinmetall Defence Electronics is participating– will be responsible for training the crews of Germany’s new multi-mission NH90 helicopters. Training will take place in privately run facilities. HFTS will be supplying four full-mission simulators, in which NH90 pilots will not only undergo flight training but also prepare for a comprehensive range of operational scenarios, including combat situations. The helicopter simulators will be used for initial flight training as well as regular refresher courses.

    Laser System for MIG 29K

Acting in close cooperation with the Russian aircraft manufacturer MiG, Rheinmetall Defence Electronics integrates a full-mission simulator containing the Avior® laser system as well as a 6DOF motion system for the carrier variant of MiG 29K fighter planes.

based on this technology the laser projection system ensures exceptionally high degree of realism in simulating take-offs and landings on an aircraft carrier. In simulating a night landing, for example, the lights of the runway can be simulated extremely vividly.

Owing to the enhanced image contrast, the Avior® laser projection system depicts the day and night view much more realistically than other systems.
