What requirements do I need to meet to become a private pilot?

Obtain at least a third class medical certificate from a FAA designated Aviation Medical Examiner (AME)

Receive ground training for the required aeronautical knowledge listed under F.A.R part 61.105 from an authorized flight or ground instructor or from a home-study course.

Receive a minimum of 40 hours of flight training

Pass a 60 question private pilot knowledge test with a minimum score of 70%.

Successfully complete the oral and practical exam given by a FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE)

The Federal Aviation Administration has set a minimum of 40 hours of flight time to be eligible for the private pilot certificate, but the national average is about 55 hours.
