Airbus Group SE on Tuesday said it delivered a 61 jetliners in August as it races to meet its full-year target for planes handed to customers.

Airbus said the planes shipped, including six A350 long-range jets, were an August record. They bring Airbus total deliveries to 400 planes in the first eight months against a target of handing over at least 650 aircraft in 2016.

Airbus struggled early this year with plane deliveries amid supplier bottlenecks that caused some models to fall behind schedule, angering airline customers. It also weighed on the company's cash flow.

Airbus said it had delivered 21 A350 planes this year through the end of August. It needs to ship at least 24 more in the last four months of the year to stick to plan.

Another model that has struggled is the A320neo, an upgraded version of the European plane maker's popular single-aisle plane. Qatar Airways has cancelled some of the A320neo planes it had ordered because of delays with that model.

Airbus said in its monthly updat that order cancellations this year have now reached 79 planes, up from 50 cancellations in the prior month. Most are for single-aisle models, wher its backlog of planes yet to be built is massive after years of strong order bookings.

The plane maker also said it had booked 144 new jetliner orders in August. All the deals were for narrowbodies.

Airbus and rival Boeing Co. are struggling to secure deals for long-range jets. Earlier Tuesday Airbus announced Vietnam Airlines had agreed to buy 10 more A350 planes on top of 10 it has already agreed to operate. The deal still needs to be finalized and would have a value of $3 billion at list price, though airlines typically get discounts.
