Leonardo’s U.K. facilities in Yeovil and Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton were in danger of significant workforce decreases. But thanks to a new deal, more than 80% of jobs are to be sustained, said the U.K. Ministry of Defense. A contract worth more than $285 million between Defense and Leonardo to support Wildcats should sustain jobs at the two facilities, along with additional jobs in the manufacturer’s supply chain.

Last October, a local unio said that 221 redundancy notices were issued at GKN Aerospace’s Leonardo airframes production facility in Yeovil. Leonardo wanted to pull production of the Royal Navy’s Leonardo AW159 Wildcats from that facility, supposedly in order to move production to Italy. Local news outlets reported last November that the facility was to close.

This new agreement is a five-year deal that covers a range of support and training services for the U.K.’s entire fleet of 62 Leonardo Wildcats, across the Royal Navy and Army Air Corps. The contract also covers jobs in Edinburgh, Luton and Crawley. Leonardo defensive aids systems are manufactured in the first two locations, and Thales U.K. provides support to Leonardo communication and aircraft management systems in the latter.

The AW159 can perform both land-based and maritime operations. It is used for anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, force protection, transport, command and control, force protection and ISTAR (information, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance) missions.
