The Duke of Cambridge has qualified as air ambulance pilot and will start work in the summer, it was announced on Thursday.

Prince William began studying last September and has now passed the 14 exams required to work as a civilian helicopter pilot.

He will undergo extra training with Bond Air Services -- who will be his employer -- shortly after his current tour of Japan and China ends.

Then he will start work for the East Anglian Air Ambulance service, flying out of Cambridge and Norwich.

The Prince will work full-time on a shift system but allowances will be made for his ongoing royal duties.

In April last year the Telegraph disclosed that the Duke was "longing" to go flying again and was hoping to gain a commercial pilot's licence.

The Prince is on a seven-day tour of the Far East wher he will visit Fukushima, the scene of Japan's 2011 nuclear disaster.

During his time in Japan the Duke will meet survivors of the 2011 tsunami that caused the Fukushima disaster and which claimed 18,500 lives.

He will also visit a Commonwealth War Graves cemetery wher British soldiers who died in the Pacific campaign in the Second World War are buried.
