Travel this Thanksgiving holiday is expected to be at a nine-year high. AAA expects almost 50 million people will be traveling Wednesday. Mostly by car, but the Quad City Airport is expecting an influx of people too.
The Quad City Airport's marketing director Cathie Rochau told us Wednesday there will be more flights for all heading off for the holiday. Normally, there are 19 flights from the quad city airport every wednesday... Today, there will be 21.
Many travel websites say if you're waiting till the last minute to book your holiday flight, the best thing to do is wait until Thursday, as it wont be quite as hectic. Thursday, there will only be about 15 flights from the Quad City Airport. That's less than normal.
One thing that could be a minor concern is the cold, wet weather over the long weekend across the country, but Rochau says that shouldn't be a problem for our airport.
"Unless we really have some freezing rain, or something that would be more significant than just a regular snowfall, that might create some issues. Normally, our issues are at the connecting hubs, to the north, for instance, when there is more significant snowfall. I think we have all the preparations ready that we need," Rochau said.
Another concern people have this thanksgiving holiday is flying in and out of O'Hare airport in Chicago, wher some airport workers are planning to go on strike. Rochau says that shoudln't affect flight schedules or flight safety at all, but it might affect wheelchair service or food service at the airport itself.
There's going to be a lot of people, so of course lines will be a little longer than usual, most travel websites recommend getting to the airport earlier than usual.
Rochau says if you're coming to the airport to pick someone up, you can either wait for them in your car at the curb and just drive right off. They also have a cell phone lot you can wait in while you wait for your family members' planes to land. She also told us if it's been a while since you've flown, it's a good idea to be up to speed on what you can and cant bring on board by visiting the TSA website.
"When people are traveling and they haven't traveled in a while that they look ahead at the travel tips, they look at the information about how to take packages and gifts, and things like large bottles of perfume and cosmetics, because those can get taken away, so we just really want to make sure people are prepared with things that they can take in certain pieces of luggage like carry-on versus packed luggage," Rochau said.
