The UK’s drone code has been updated, which means a whole new set of regulations have come into force in the UK to help drone-users fly the gadgets safely.
The changes came as the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said it wanted to raise awareness among people who may get a drone as a gift in the run up to the holidays, especially after conducting research that showed only 39% of drone owners know about the safe-flying regulations (via BBC).
And it’s a timely updat too, as in October there were four near-misses between drones and civil aircraft reported in the UK, and 56 so far in 2016. Yikes.
The revised code sums up the changes in five main safety tips, and they're easy enough to remember as they even come in the form of an always-fun mnemonic that spells out the word DRONE:
Don't fly near airports or airfields
Remember to stay below 120m (400ft) and at least 50m (150ft) away from people
Observe your drone at all times
Never fly near aircraft
Enjoy responsibly
So, now all you have to do is remember to DRONE when you're flying your drone. Got it?
