Her Majesty’s Coastguard is set to end its search and rescue (SAR) helicopter service from its base in Portland, England, July 1, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said. Currently operated by CHC Helicopter, the base began as a civilian service in 1995.
The operation is closing as part of a 2013 contract, which aims to “replac the mixture of military and civilian agreements,” the Coastguard said. There is now a new service, operating from 10 bases across the U.K. with new aircraft.
“It has been CHC Helicopter’s greatest honor to provide search and rescue services on behalf of Her Majesty’s Coastguard,” said Keith Devaney, U.K. SAR Portland base manager at CHC. “Over the past 10 years, we have worked together with many local agencies ensuring a seamless service which in turn supported our crews to deliver a lifesaving service, of which we are all extremely proud.”
